Malaer Mor stood in a tranquil peace for hundreds of years before the war. All the elements were in harmony with the other, and magical creatures flourished in the land. Peace never lasts, though, and this one was no different.
The Lords and Ladies were transitioning, showing their new heirs the ropes, and letting them lead. Only the Earth Lady and the High Lady remained in their positions, and this enabled them to watch the progress of the others. This is how they found out about the Alliance that had been created between the Fire, Ice, Wind, and Storm elements.
Fire, Ice, Wind, and Storm heirs believed that they were the rightful rulers of the land. They banded together from early on, and created an alliance that they called The Noble Elements. All ruled their own element, and solved any disputes in their joined alliance. They were almost unstoppable, and their ambition brought them the idea of conquering the other lands, where they would rule.
These ideas turned into plans, and plans turned into action as they rallied their "pure" armies and marched upon the territories. These young rulers had plenty of supporters, and it was all too easy for them to kill their Lords and Ladies. They would then stand on the thrones, and their elements would have no choice but follow them. Storm was the first to take action, and they moved on Air territory.
Air was, unfortunately, the first to fall. A bloody battle followed the young Air Lord's answer to the Storm Ambassador, in which Lord Thaerol was killed, and the swiftly appointed new Lord Cejarn was seriously injured. The fastest of the air dragons was sent to Earth Lady Aesaelshortly before Cejarn was pulled from the fight, a dragon called Batwing, who would have a large part in the coming years.
When the Earth Lady received news of what had happened, she was immediately bombarded with questions from her advisers and generals. Aesael's first plan of action was to send messengers to the Water and Sky elements. The messenger sent to the Sky never returned, but only a few days later, Water troops arrived with her messenger and close friend, Lady Tesael. Aesael got her friends comfortable until the enemy arrived, and readied her own troops for combat. The numbers that she had been able to rally were tremendous, and she hoped for the best.
While the Storm dragons wasted their time pillaging the Air territory, Fire and Ice moved in on the Earth territory. They knew of the water troops, and had planned for the attack. Fire entered first, casting their fiery breath over the beautiful forest, burning trees and undergrowth to the ground. Aesael wanted nothing more than to go out herself and slay the monsters, the forest was her home, and her friend, but Tesael convinced her to send out the Water troops to set out the fires and take down the Fire dragons.
The Water dragons succeeded, with the help of some local magical creatures, to put out the fires, and drive the Fire dragons back, but as soon as they reached the border, a new line of Fire dragons set upon them. Only one young Water dragon escaped the slaughter, and gave the news to the Lady. Aesael could not be held back this time, and she flew out of her lair, sending earthquakes upon the fire troops. Lady Tesael joined her soon, and send a tidal wave from the nearby swamp to engulf the fires. The rest of the Fire dragons fled, and the Wind began their own attack.
Only as Tesael and Aesael flew out high above the Fire and Wind troops did they realize that they were heavily outnumbered, and out maneuvered. They were completely cut off from Air and Sky, and quickly began to think that they were not going to survive this onslaught of terror.
Weakened by their powerful attacks on the Fire dragons, the two friends flew quickly back to where they were laired, and began to talk over their options. Surrender never came to mind, for both were strong and stubborn leaders. They sought the guidance of their officers and advisers, but none could find a decent alternative. The Wind dragons continued to tear apart the forests in an attempt to find where they hid, and as they neared the last haven, Aesael sent out two messengers to Sky in a last attempt to call for help.
Two days later, one of the messengers found the Cloud Palace, and collapsed at the gates, near death. The soldiers guarding the palace brought him to the High Lady Vyrdaes. She heard his message with wise and thoughtful eyes. He barely had the strength to speak, and once he had delivered his message, she had him put into one of the most secluded places in the Palace, and he was nourished back to health. By this time, Earth and Water had both fallen, and High Lady Vyrdaes knew not what she should do. She spent her days in the libraries of her palace, listening to the guidance her advisers and heir gave her.
"We must help them, Lady. We'll be next if we don't do something!" Caladwen pleaded. By now, High Lady Vyrdaes had named her the Heir to the Sky, and she knew her duties to Malaer Mor better than was expected.
"I will lead the attack myself," she begged, "Please, we must go!"
THe High Lady eventually agreed to go to battle, but by then, only Fire had not recovered from the previous battles and pillaging. The Noble Elements were at their highest, and strongest. The Leaders had gained knowledge from their losses, and from their wins, and were prepared for the attack from Sky.
Caladwen knew her battles though. She entered the Noble Element headquarters in the hot Fire territory afternoon. She was not stopped, which was no surprise to her. It would be an attack, but not a surprise by any means. As she neared the main meeting area, she was swarmed upon by dragons from every different element. She held them all off until the whole of the guard was attacking her, then began to act like she was weakening, and allowed them to pin her down. Her troops moved in then, and massacred the guard that was attacking her.
The Leaders were waiting for her by now, and she entered their presence with the only scratch visible a small cut across her eye. She attacked them swiftly and without warning, and brought down the Wind Lord Paedia Mol before she was pulled away by the new guard. She was surprised to see that her eggling brother was among them. She stopped fighting then, and looked at him, confused.
He didn't remember her, of course, and simply growled, looking at his remaining Lords and Lady. They order her to be escorted back to her troops, and a battle would ensue the next day.
An a battle it was. Caladwen's troops consisted of dragons from every element, and that threw off the Noble Element armies. Caladwen had a sure fire victory in her claws, but then, her brother appeared again, and attacked her viciously. She could not fight back, for he was blood, and that was indeed thicker than anything other. He taunted her to fight, but she couldn't, and as she neared death, the Air dragons appeared. They flung themselves into the battle, with no regard to whether they lived or died. Batwing was among them, and he saw Caladwen lieing on the ground with Aarnor clawing away her life. He attacked Aarnor, be careful not to further injure Caladwen. The battle was a losing one for the Sky, for now they were simple defending their leader, and were becoming worried for the peace that they had sought to bring to the land.
But Air was not the only one who still had reserves of power. Tesael was still alive, even without her dear friend by her side. She was in a rage now, for Wind had killed Aesael, and she threw herself upon the Wind troops, killing every last one. She collapsed after that, from blood loss and fatigue, but her troops fought on, along with the aide of the Earth dragons, who brought down the few remaining fire dragons who had destroyed their home.
Caladwen was not a weak leader, not by any means, and as Batwing pulled Aarnor off of her, she sprang up and began her attack anew, rallying her troops to her, and then surging forward to crush the rest of the resistance. The remaining Lords and Lady were captured, and brought to the Skies to be punished justly, and new Lords and Ladies were put in their place, chosen from the dragons who had refused to fight in that horrible war.
Tesael died the day that the former Leaders were stripped of their status and chased out of Malaer Mor. She had grieved over her friends' death, and she could no longer hold her life together. She was set upon the ocean to swim free forever.
Caladwen, however, lived to see another day. Batwing had killed her brother, but she was greatful to him, and appologized for her weakness. As the year wore on, she realized that her Lady was indeed growning older, and weaker, and one sunny day, she called Caladwen to her rooms for a private talk. Caladwen left the room two days later, her eyes bloodshot, but a determined look on her face. The first thing she did was announce to the Sky dragon that the High Lady was dead.
A mourning service was held for three days as the High Lady's body quickly turned to dust, and then was thrown to the skies. Caladwen has ruled the Skies for numerous years now, and has seen a slightly unstable peace through, but The Noble Elements still exist, and are out there somewhere, planning for their next attempt on the freedom of Malaer Mor.
